ITT navigation subsystem successfully launched on newest generation
Global Positioning System Satellite
Rochester, N.Y., June 28, 2010 - ITT Corporation (NYSE:ITT) announced today its latest contribution to the Global Positioning System (GPS) program. The advanced L1/L2 subsystem, developed by ITT, is onboard the newest GPS IIF satellite, designated GPS IIF-1. The U.S. Air Force successfully launched the satellite on May 27 via a Delta IV rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
The navigation technology on the GPS IIF satellite includes enhancements for defense and commercial applications, such as improved accuracy through advanced atomic clocks, a more jam-resistant military signal, and a new civil signal (L5) that benefits aviation safety and search and rescue efforts. GPS IIF-1 is the first of 12 IIFs being built by a team led by Boeing Company for the U.S. Air Force,
"ITT is proud to be a part of another successful GPS satellite launch that will improve position, navigation, and timing services for warfighters and civil users worldwide," said Mark Pisani, vice president, Positioning, Navigation and Timing Systems, ITT Geospatial Systems. "ITT payloads or payload components have been aboard every GPS spacecraft for more than 35 years. We are pleased to be part of the Boeing team building GPS IIF satellites for the Air Force."
ITT was selected by Boeing to build the L1 and L2 transmitters, as well as the Synthesizer/Interface/Modulator/IPA/Converter (SIMIC) in September 2003. The SIMIC is a component of the L1/L2 subsystem (LBS) in the GPS IIF Space Vehicle. The purpose of the LBS is to provide the L1 and L2 navigation signals for transmission to GPS ground receivers. The SIMIC provides onboard reprogrammable signal flexibility.
